Abstract : Urban runoff is frequent in cities with both superficial and underground drainage systems. Streets are used to convey storm water either to drainage elements of greater capacity or to gutters. A numerical model to study the flow in street networks is presented. It uses experimental results obtained in a scale model of street crossings having width ratios of 1:1, 1:2 and 2:3 and including the simulation of gutters. The existing criteria to evaluate the risk associated to urban runoff are described. Two of these criteria were developed by the authors. As a study case, the flow analysis in a street network of the city of Mendoza, Argentina using the described numerical model is presented, as well as the results of the application of four risk criteria. As a conclusion, the present model is a very useful tool to study the flow in street networks, to analyse the risk applying different criteria and to evaluate the influence of the number of gutters in the fulfilment of the criteria.
