Abstract : This chapter is devoted to presenting a systematic investigation on the response and stability characteristics of an example gear pair system. Such systems are an important part and affect significantly the response of more complex rotor dynamic systems. The mechanical model examined involves strong non-linear characteristics. In particular, it takes into account gear mesh backlash and static transmission error as well as the essential non-linearities due to the bearing clearance and contact characteristics. The main emphasis is placed on studying long-term dynamics by applying appropriate numerical methodologies. In this way, useful information is obtained for the influence of the loading, the gear mesh and the bearing parameters on the system dynamic response, including periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motions. First, classical response diagrams are presented, illustrating the effect of the most important parameters on the system response. Moreover, direct integration of the equations of motion is also performed, demonstrating the existence of quasi-periodic and chaotic long-term response for selected combinations of the system parameters. Finally, the focus is shifted to some related models that have appeared in the literature, as well as to some future trends in the research area examined.
